S&M also means "Stand & Model" — Folsom Street Fair 2023
Folsom Street Fair is the best free fashion show on the planet.
Attending the Folsom Street Fair with anyone dressed to the nines in their finery means “S&M” takes on a whole new meaning, especially when trying to walk the length of the fair, which is normally just a 15-minute stroll from 8th Street to 12th Street. But for anyone dressed to kill, those four blocks can take half the day, as one gets endlessly stopped for photographs by the more sartorial-challenged. Indeed, for many Folsom Street Fair attendees, S&M means “stand & model.”
We kept our photo selection pretty tame, but there are a couple butts in this lineup. See the latest by Adriana Roberts
What Craigslist’s missed connections are still good for
My mom has this Craigslist printout from 2002 that she’s kept framed in the bathroom since I was a kid. The title reads: “SF I love you. Unrequitedly.” In it, the author details their love for the city, loneliness within it, and feelings of hopelessness yet inevitability around leaving it for the fourth time. “You have opened my eyes and mind, and completely drained my soul, much like an early-20s relationship.”
Part love letter, part scream into the void, and deeply personal to the Bay Area. Tiny and nostalgic and electric with longing, each Missed Connection feels like the beginning of a rom-com that will be inevitably abandoned midway through production.
Read the latest by Cayenn Landau. We’re stoked Craigslist founder Craig Newmark saw this one. And the full OG post we transcribed is epic, too.
Here’s where I love to eat in the Tenderloin
The Tenderloin gets a massive amount of bad press as the center of San Francisco’s worst drugs and homelessness. But the neighborhood remains a tiny part of our ever-vibrant city filled with top-notch food, as it is the case in every SF community. I remember it as a rough place to live as a girl 1998, but my long experience with the TL and San Francisco also informed me on the best places to eat there, and you’ll really find some great ones.

What we’re doing this week
The de Young Open
The second triennial of this juried community art exhibition will feature submissions by artists from the nine Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. Artworks will be hung “salon style,” installed nearly edge to edge and floor to ceiling, maximizing the number of works displayed. Designed to celebrate and support our local arts communities, this exhibition allows artists to offer their works for sale and retain the proceeds.
Futura Fashion Show
The SF Fashion Festival on Oct. 7 will present two fashion shows, a clean beauty lounge, speaking panel with industry leaders in fashion, beauty & wellness. Get ready for an evening of private shopping, music, fashion, state-of-the-art cocktails and more!
What’s on our mind
We keep content mostly fun and light at The Bold Italic, but the future of the Bay Area interests us, too. Here’s what we are thinking about in local news. Brought to you by GrowSF.
10,000 graffiti complaints in last 6 months
Graffiti has become so common that many of us have simply stopped seeing it. But the hardworking small business owners haven’t.
Over the past six months, over 10,000 graffiti complaints have been filed with the city and the ones footing the bill are our already struggling restauranteurs, writes Elena Kadvany for The Chronicle.
