De Young Open proves to us the Bay Area art scene is alive and well
This year, 7,766 artists submitted their work to an anonymous jury, and 883 artists won a spot on the gallery wall.
In case you haven’t heard: San Francisco’s art scene is dead. So dead, in fact, that the de Young had to pick from nearly 8,000 artists for its triennial exhibition featuring works from nine Bay Area counties.
The Bay Area art world has been buzzing for months in anticipation of the second de Young Open and the rare opportunity for local artists to have their work hung in one of San Francisco’s major art museums. I had the pleasure and privilege of getting a sneak peek at the exhibition and a chance to speak with the artists themselves.

Castro Street Fair is a testament to Harvey Milk’s legacy
Harvey Milk made important strides for us even before he became the first openly gay supervisor elected to office in San Francisco. He started Castro Street Fair some 49 years ago to promote queer businesses that faced hostilities and challenges, like his own Castro Camera on 575 Castro Street. I think he would have been proud of his efforts last weekend.

Presidio is the new home of the magically Mediterranean Dalida
Turkish food is having a moment locally, thank goodness. And from some masterful chefs. Chef duo Laura and Sayat Ozyilmaz opened Dalida in San Francisco on June 30, 2023, in one of the Presidio’s striking brick buildings lining the Main Parade Lawn, within eyesight of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge, surrounded by forests.

What’s on our mind
We keep content mostly fun and light at The Bold Italic, but the future of the Bay Area interests us, too. Here’s what we are thinking about in local news. Brought to you by GrowSF.
Senator and former SF Mayor Dianne Feinstein passed away
Senator Dianne Feinstein was an icon. After struggling with health issues, she passed away earlier this week at the age of 90. Senator Feinstein commenced her career in public service when she was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1969.
Senator Feinstein was a woman of firsts. She was the first woman to be President of the Board of Supervisors, the first woman to serve as Mayor of San Francisco after Mayor Moscone and Supervisor Milk were assassinated, and the first woman elected to the Senate from California. In the Senate, to which she was reelected five times, she was the first woman to chair the Senate Rules Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Hello T von D — Loved your article on the de Young OPEN 2023. Coincidentally, it was fun to see my gold painting BRILLIANT, #606 in the OPEN just behind the artist whose work #608 you wrote about!
